Air Afrique was a Pan-African airline that was founded in 1961 as a joint venture between eleven West African countries. The airline was extremely special. It represented a dream of African unity. Despite being dissolved in 2002, its identity and impact is still felt today throughout the world of aviation and beyond.

Air Afrique was one of the first airlines to provide air transportation services to the African continent. Prior to its establishment, air travel in Africa was limited and expensive. One of its core principles was to make air travel more accessible and affordable for people living in West Africa, thereby promoting economic development and regional integration.

Perhaps its most distinctive feature was its unique and distinctive brand identity. The airline's logo features a Roan Antelope, sometimes called a horse antelope, in the form of a Bambara mask. It was intended to project strength, grace, and a strong work ethic. It was instantly recognizable and symbolized the airline's commitment to connecting the continent. It was only fitting that the airline’s identity would be rooted heavily in African culture. This commitment to its roots, would influence all of the airline's designs for its livery, uniforms, and other elements. In the late 1960’s French designer Ted Lapidus was hired to design the uniforms worn by its stewardess. The airline also had a reputation for providing top-notch customer service, which further contributed to its coolness factor.

Off the ground, Air Afrique was a pioneer in the field of air travel. The airline was one of the first to introduce the concept of a "flying hotel" which was a service that provided passengers with on-board accommodation and meals. This was a revolutionary concept at the time and set a new standard for air travel.

Air Afrique played a significant role in the development of the African aviation industry. The airline helped to train pilots, mechanics, and other aviation professionals from across the continent, thus helping to build a strong and skilled workforce. The airline also helped to establish and expand airports and air traffic control systems in various African countries.

Beyond any shadow of doubt, Air Afrique was perhaps one of the chicest airlines ever in history. More importantly Its establishment made air travel more accessible and affordable for people living in West Africa, its unique and distinctive brand identity, its pioneering concept of "flying hotel" and its role in the development of the African aviation industry. It’s legacy continues to be felt today.
