The small West African nation of Togo is a long strip of land situated between Ghana and Benin. It derives its name from the indigenous Ewe language and means "the land where the lagoons lie”. Colonialism shaped of modern-day Togo, starting in the 15th century with the arrival of the Portuguese. In the 1800’s the German’s settled there calling it Togoland. During WWI, the Brits and the French invaded, splitting it into two occupying territories, respectively, British and French Togoland. After WWII, British Togoland voted to join the Gold Coast, (a British Crown colony), which in 1957 became modern day Ghana. Seeking independence from France in 1960, French Togoland became the Togolese Republic. Like most sub-Saharan West African nations, Togo faces tremendous challenges in virtually every facet of life. Despite lacking the natural resources of many of its neighbors, Togo took advantage of its small size and unique location and evolved into a transit nation. Following in the footsteps of Hong Kong and Singapore, Togo's capital, Lome, has become an essential transshipment point for Africa, and today is West Africa’s busiest port. Togo’s future isn’t focused solely on Maritime commerce. Commercial aviation is the next sector. The airline industry is catalyst for economic growth because it interacts with numerous sectors of commerce, local businesses, and stimulates foreign investment and international trade. In 1998 Air Togo became the national carrier of the country, operating mostly domestic flights, along with a few international flights to France. Sadly, it ceased operations two years later. But sometimes you must take the hit before you can grow. Even though it didn’t succeed, it showed them the way. In 2016, Lome-Tokoin Airport, (also known as Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport) added a new modern terminal with the capacity to handle 2 million passengers. Additionally, it is the hub of Asky airlines, a joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines. We look forward to seeing how these improvements impact the area, and must always remember that it started with Air Togo.
