Air Volta
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country located in the heart of West Africa surrounded by nine countries. Originally colonized by France, it was known as Haute Volta or Upper Volta. By 1960 it gained its independence. Despite facing countless problems in every sector, the government knew that an airline would be essential to its survival. For small developing nations, a national airline is important for a myriad of reasons including economic development, infrastructure development, and regional integration. Connecting people and places would help its citizens to overcome geographical barriers. Most importantly, it would serve to establish a national identity on the world stage. For small, impoverished nations like Burkina Faso, a national airline can be a powerful symbol of independence and self-determination.
In 1967, with backing from the Burkina Faso government, Air Volta became operational. This represented a major investment in the country's transport infrastructure and a symbol of Burkina Faso's aspirations for growth and development. Drawing inspiration from the country’s national emblem, a red-billed quelea, (a bird is known for its resilience and adaptability), the airline’s logo featured a stylized depiction of a bird in flight, with its wings outstretched and its head turned to the side.
The airline provided domestic and international flights, connecting Burkina Faso to other west African cities such as Abidjan, Bamako, Cotonou, and Dakar. Pilots, cabin crew, and ground staff were hired. It played a vital role in the development of the country's tourism industry, as it allowed foreign visitors to discover the country's many cultural and natural attractions, including the ancient Dogon ruins, wildlife reserves, and the vibrant city of Ouagadougou.
By the year 2000 Air Volta had been operating at a loss and was heavily indebted to its suppliers and creditors. The government had been providing financial support to the airline to keep it running, but eventually, it was deemed too costly to continue this lifeline. In 2004 the airline was shut down and ceased all operations. During its 37 years in operation, Air Volta help bring the world to Burkina Faso, and West Africa.
Air Volta remains one of the great legacy airlines of West Africa. We at Layover Goods salute this special carrier.
