Flie: LEGACY AIRLINE

CAMEROON AIRLINES

In 1971, The Government of Cameroon pulled out of the consortium of nations that jointly owned the pan-African carrier, Air Afrique. Cameroon wanted to establish a national carrier that could serve domestic and regional destinations, provide greater control over its aviation industry, and demonstrate the country's sovereignty and independence during a period of political transition. In November of 1971, Cameroon Airlines became operational, its initial fleet was comprised of two Boeing 737-200’s flying domestic routes between Douala and Yaoundé. Several months they launched their international routes with service to Rome and Paris, using a long-range Boeing 707. By 1981, to better served their international routes, Cameroon Airlines modernized their fleet with the addition of a Boeing 747-200. For any African carrier, having a 747 in their fleet was a huge step.

With its unique, brightly colored livery, the airline was one of the first African carriers to develop a distinct and recognizable brand identity. This was a departure from the more generic branding used by so many other airlines at the time, and helped to position Cameroon Airlines as a proud and distinctive carrier that represented the people and culture of Cameroon.

Over the years, Cameroon Airlines had the honor of flying some of the world's most renowned figures. In 1975 the legendary singer, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown flew aboard the airline to Cameroon where he performed a historic concert in the capital city of Douala. In 1985, while visiting Cameroon, Pope John Paul II was flown aboard a Cameroon Airlines 737, allowing him to visit smaller cities throughout the region.

Despite its popularity and success, Cameroon Airlines eventually faced financial difficulties, which ultimately led to its demise. The airline struggled to keep up with the competition and was unable to adapt to the changing market trends. In 2008, Cameroon Airlines, and its fleet were grounded for good.
