There are some places in this world that are imbued with a certain spirit. These places exist all around the globe. The Ollofson Hotel in Port Au Prince, Haiti, the Baghdad Zoo in Iraq, and Beirut’s Hotel Alcazar to name a few. Sadly the world around them becomes rife with turmoil pitting them in a fight for their survival. Outside forces try hard to extinguish the spirit of these places. But despite all of the harsh realities thrown at them, they continue to live.
Since gaining its independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has sadly been plagued with decades of instability and conflict. In the capital, Bangui, exists a rather unique establishment. The Club Hippique of BanguI, often referred to simply as Club Hippique, it is an equestrian club. Located in the Ouango District in the eastern area of the city, upon a stepped terrace overlooking the Obangi River, this unique equestrian club was first established in the early 20th century during the French colonial era, the club has a rich history and is known for its focus on equestrian sports. For years it was dedicated to the preservation and advancement of horseback riding and equestrian pursuits in the region.
During its heyday, the club gave riding lessons, (strictly English saddle) and taught young people how to care for horses. In addition to riding there were tennis courts. Prices varied for members and non-members, but all were welcome. Most importantly it was a gathering place for equestrian lovers to come together and share their love of the sport. During the turbulent period of Jean Bedel Bokassa’s rule, he imported many horses to participate in military exercises. Many of those horses were rescued and brought to the club. Over the years, certain individuals took it upon themselves to look after the horses. Despite all the various conflicts over the past two decades, a small group of dedicated individuals have toiled to keep the dream of The Club Hippique alive. While today it is a shell of its former self, yet it still exists, refusing to succumb to the elements.
