In the 90’s I worked as trader at a petroleum company based in Geneva. My job involved traveling to different parts of the world. It was a very exciting time. I got to travel and discover so many wonderful places. For several years my work was focused on the Latin America markets. Then in 1998, I was promoted to the African operations division.

My first trip took me to the small African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, a Portuguese speaking country situated off the coast of central Africa close to the equator. I was excited but also a bit apprehensive as I had never been to Africa. At that time, the only route to Sao Tome and Principe. was through Libreville, Gabon, on Equatorial International Airlines, then the national carrier of Sao Tome and Principe.

When I finally got to Libreville, I remember walking onto the tarmac and seeing the plane. It was an old twin propeller Fokker F27-400. I remember thinking the plane looked quite aged. Equatorial International’s faded emblem, (a map of Africa with two red lines intersecting at STP), was painted on the tail. The cabin had been divided into two sections separated by a central aisle. The seats were in a 2-2 configuration, with two seats on either side of the aisle. They looked old and were upholstered with a multicolored fabric. It was bit like taking a trip back in time. The overhead bins were rather small like the kind you would see on an old bus, but instead of secure closures there was a small cord to prevent items from falling. There was no in-flight entertainment system. Despite appearances, the plane did its job and got us all safely to Sao Tome.

Over the next 2 years I made 6 trips to Sao Tome and Principe. After a while, I began to look forward to flying there. I always found the crew of the EIA, to be very professional and was always greeted warmly by the crew. It wasn’t fancy, but EIA provided a good and reliable service. Several years later, I was sad to hear the airline had gone out of business. I look back to my journeys aboard EIA, with great fondness. Thanks to this special airline, I was able to discover some of the most remarkable places in Africa.
