It's a city that's seen it all—born out of the ambitions of the French, named after a fallen soldier, and transformed into the beating heart of an independent Chad, a country most people have never even heard of. In 1973, after Chad gained independence from France in 1960, Fort Lamy was renamed N'Djamena. The renaming was part of a broader effort to replace colonial names with indigenous ones that properly reflected the country's new national identity. Here, the past and present collide in a chaotic dance of tradition and modernity.
