Hippopotamus NYC 2
File under: Legendary Nightlife
In the 1970s, the Hippopotamus was a night club that was ahead of its time. Its owner was the visionary impresario, Oliver Coquelin, (Le Club, Cheetah, Habitation Le Clerc). During its heyday, it was the place to be for an unforgettable night out. Located in the basement of the historic Ansonia Hotel, on Broadway and 73rd Street, it was known for its extravagant decor. The club was designed to resemble a safari lodge, complete with faux animals, African masks, and other exotic furnishings. The centerpiece of the club was a massive fiberglass hippopotamus, which was suspended from the ceiling and served as a dance floor.
The club was one of the first in New York to embrace the disco sound, which was just beginning to gain popularity at the time. The club's DJs played a mix of funk, soul, and disco, and the dance floor was always packed with enthusiastic dancers.
The club had a large celebrity clientele. Famous musicians, actors, and other celebrities were regulars at the club, including Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, and Bianca Jagger. Steve Rubell was regular before he opened Studio 54.
Hippopotamus was a unique and iconic venue that captured the spirit of the 1970s disco era. Its distinctive design, music, and atmosphere made it a beloved destination for partygoers and a lasting symbol of the era.
