Hotel Etoile du Nord Tamanrasset

Greetings from the Sahara! I finally made it to Tamanrasset. This town is very rugged and like something out of a film. My flight from Algiers was a bit bumpy. Other than that we got here in one piece. What this place lacks in creature comforts makes up for it in the most breathtaking scenery. Southern Algeria is truly beautiful. Tam, (as the locals call it) is right at the base of the Hoggar Mountains, it’s basically a very rugged frontier town. Today I was walking around and thinking about what it must have been like here a hundred years ago, with all the traders making their way from Timbuktu to the Mediterranean. Just wild.
After I got to my hotel, I was met by my local guide, Ibrahim. Like many of the Tuaregs, Ibrahim’s family is nomadic and moves throughout the desert while tending to their flock of camels and other animals. I am really looking forward to seeing the deeper desert. My hotel, The Hotel Etoile du Nord, (The North Star) is a lovely oasis. The lobby is quite large with tall ceilings. Despite not having air conditioning it seems to stay pretty cool. My room is more or less functional. (I’ve stayed in worse) I do have a balcony that looks out onto a barn type building where all the camels sleep. The staff is quite helpful, but don’t speak any English. I must really try to use my limited French as best I can. This evening I ate dinner in the hotel’s dining room, which was a rather decent meal, (Meat and potatoes., with a salad.) and shockingly, a decent red wine. I sat across from a group of Frenchmen who were riding motorcycles through the Sahara. Very brave considering there aren't a lot of medical facilities around here.
Well it’s getting late here, and I am extremely tired, so I must sign off from the lovely Hotel Etoile Du Nord. Tomorrow I am going to see the home of Father Charles de Foucauld, the French army officer turned Catholic priest, and explorer, who came here in the early part of the century. Should be very interesting. Then the day after going into the deep desert. I can;t wait. Anyway, I will try to write more from the deep Sahara.
