Sudan Airways
December 25, 1990
Cynthia,
I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. As for me, I am currently stranded in the Khartoum airport, experiencing what just might be, the longest layover of my life. Let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure. Since I have nothing else to do, I thought I would write you this letter.
It all started when Sudan Airlines decided to cancel my flight to Cairo. (I’m mad at myself for booking this fight so close to Christmas). There aren’t words that can accurately describe my frustration, knowing that I would miss spending Christmas Eve with you. But, I soon realized that this layover would be the true test of my love for you. After all, if I can survive 27 hours in the Khartoum airport, I can survive anything.
The airport itself is quite the sight to behold. The floors are sticky, the ceilings are low, and the air conditioning is non-existent. But, the real gem of this place is the food. Oh, the food. Let me tell you about the dish that has become my new best friend: Foul Medames. It's a bean stew, and I have to say, it's not half bad. It's not half good either, but it's something to eat. I've had it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I have to say, I'm starting to develop a bit of a bean belly. But, it's all worth it for you, my love.
I've also made some new friends here in the airport. There's Ahmed, who's on his way to visit his sick grandmother. He's been teaching me some Arabic, and I have to say, I'm becoming quite the linguist. There's also Fatima, who's on her way to see her husband in Dubai. She's been showing me how to make traditional Sudanese tea. It's quite delicious.
But, despite all the fun I'm having here in the airport, I can't wait to come home to you. The airline representative just told me my flight will depart in roughly 3 hours. I am counting the minutes. I miss your smile, your laugh, and your cooking. Especially the cooking part. I can't wait to be home in your arms.
Love,
Your stranded husband Martin
