Ville de Tombouctou
The fabled city of Tombouctou, or as we say in the west, "Timbuktu" sits at the south edge of the Sahara desert, right at the edge of Niger River. Centuries earlier it was the main gateway to five major trade routes that cut through the Sahara to the Mediterranean Sea. Salt caravans, traders, and explorers all made their way through this legendary outpost. Many had believed the city was full of gold and jewels. Tombouctou had something better than gold, Knowledge. The late 15th century began the golden period of Tombouctou. Thousands of scholars attended Islamic universities or quaranic schools. The scholars transferred their precious knowledge onto hundreds of thousands of manuscripts. For hundreds of years these manuscripts were looked after by generations of librarians. In 2013 Islamic extremists connected to Al-queda took control of Tombouctou. Fearing these ancient scrolls would be destroyed, a small group of librarians managed to smuggle them to safety via an underground railroad of sorts. The heroic acts of these few individuals managed to save the real priceless treasures of Tombouctou. Today we salute the brave librarians who risked everyting to preserve their heritage.
